Emperor Wu of Han sent Zhang Qian to the Western Regions to open up trade routes connecting to Rome, where silk, spices, and technology circulated for millennia. 4-14th century Buddhist art treasury, murals and documents covering multiple languages, early 20th century to attract Stein and other Western explorers.
