Qixi (Chinese Valentine's Day)
Chinese Love Story: Niu Lang was an orphan on earth. After his parents died, he was mistreated by his elder brother and sister - in - law. They only gave him an old ox and a broken cart. Niu Lang depended on this old ox. Zhi Nu was a fairy in the heaven, good at weaving. She and other fairies often went to the Milky Way to bathe. One day, the old ox suddenly spoke and told Niu Lang that Zhi Nu and other fairies would bathe by the Milky Way. He should steal Zhi Nu's clothes so that she would stay on earth. Niu Lang followed the old ox's instructions and hid Zhi Nu's clothes. After Zhi Nu and other fairies finished bathing, they found their clothes missing. The other fairies flew back to heaven, but Zhi Nu couldn't leave. Niu Lang pleaded with Zhi Nu to stay, and Zhi Nu was moved by his sincerity and finally agreed to be his wife. When the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother learned that Zhi Nu had married on earth, they were furious and ordered the heavenly soldiers to take Zhi Nu back to heaven. When Niu Lang returned home and found Zhi Nu was taken away, he quickly put on the cowhide left by the old ox before it died and chased after her with their two children. Just as he was about to catch up, the Queen Mother pulled out the gold hairpin from her head and drew a line in the air. A surging Tianhe River (Milky Way) appeared instantly, separating Niu Lang and Zhi Nu. Niu Lang and Zhi Nu could only look at each other across the river. Their cries moved the Jade Emperor, and finally, the Jade Emperor allowed them to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Every year on this day, magpies fly to form a magpie bridge, allowing Niu Lang and Zhi Nu to meet on the bridge.
Therefore, the seventh day of the seventh lunar month has become Chinese Valentine's Day.
